Socceroo #273, Steve Perry, has nominated Cronulla RSL SC as his GrassRoots club and he joins Richie Bell in naming the Stingrays.
Solander Field (pictured) is the ground to which the club moved from its original home, Captain Cook Field, just across the road, where both Steve & Richie grew up playing. Captain Cook is now a rugby league field.
Steve made his Socceroo debut in 1978 at the SCG against Greece alongside 6 other debutants, he was on the books of Brisbane City at the time. Steve was picked up from under 15's by Sutherland coach Mike Johnson for the last 4 or 5 games of the 1969 3rd grade season which they won. Next year he was a fixture at right back in the Sutherland first grade side that won promotion.
In all Steve won a dozen caps for Australia and came back to RSL to play O45s (something echoed by Dave Ratcliffe) before finally hanging up the boots and joining Jack Reilly & Michael Denton in moving to Tasmania.
Steve is the second leg of the Stingrays male trifecta and it is an absolute pleasure to have him aboard.
