the discovery of the GrassRoots club of the first ever Socceroo goalkeeper, George Cartwright, Socceroo #2.
George was Balmain boy playing his football for Leichhardt Rovers winners of the State U18 "Nurse Cup".
George made his debut in the 1922 Tour of NZ and would play in all 10 of our first "A" internationals.
He was the custodian for Balmain-Fernleigh in the Metropolitan League and would be our most capped keeper until Ron Corry almost 50 years later.
My thanks to the Inner West Council's Balmain Library for the use of their photo, its discovery made this amatuer sleuth very happy.
gotta love the turtle neck, very stylish.
