The northern beaches of Sydney was a hotspot for women's football in the early 80's. The force behind this growth in the game was Leonie Parker who saw no less than 5 players springing from her Manly rep side into the Australian team over the period. The first of these was Matilda #27, Vicky Salmons (nee Cerny).

Salmons was a member of the inaugural Killarney Heights Ladies side playing in the northern suburbs comp at Manly Vale's Miller Reserve, she won selection in the very first Manly women's Rep side in 1976, thence, after switching to a life between the sticks graduated to the state side and won the first of her 5 caps for Australia in 1983 against New Zealand alongside fellow Manly team mate Kristen Theile.

Greg Werner began playing in 1965, with the GrassRoots club of Socceroo skipper Murray Barnes, a change of suburb at age 6 and a new club, one that would become the GrassRoots club of Rob Wheatley & after a 27 year hiatus came back to playing with the GrassRoots club of Socceroos Steve Perry, Richie Bell, Chris Iconomidis & Matilda, Justine Fisher, one could say that the links with the NT are ingrained.
At age 55, when his body gave up on playing, he took up the whistle to stay actively involved. In November of 2014 he created the GFP on Facebook to fill the void left by those in control of the game & in January 2016 launched this website.
