Born and raised in Wonoona in the northern suburbs of the Illawarra, an hour south of Sydney, there was only one he was going to play for, Wonoona where he started out as an 8yr old playing in the 14's, lived a block from Wonoona Public School & captained the Sth Coast Scools at 11.
Charlie was a natural sportsman who excelled at whatever he tried his hand and by 18 became the youngest man to ever play for his country when his prowess on the wing earned him his 1st cap in the first test against the touring Sth. Africans in 1947.
Charlie played his football in what was the second golden era for Illawarra football, may the 3rd be not far away.
My thanks to his lovely wife Melva for her time and to Karen his daughter for putting us together.
