Today's nominator is probably unique in the Australian football story.
Steve Hogg, Socceroo #295, has offered up the Anglican Grammar School (Churchie) in Brisbane as his GrassRoots outfit. Steve grew up on Bougainville loving Australian Rules, but was sent to boarding school in Brisbane at 12. Now GPS Schools and football were not a natural pairing in the 1970s, you played rugby or you played rugby, but Steve was lucky enough to have a teacher who wanted to set up a football program. Who'd have thought that within 5 years of learning to play, this natural athlete would coming under the wing of Johnny Warren.
After moving to school in Canberra both he & Danny Moulis were selected from the ACT & National schools side for the newly formed Canberra NSL team.
Talk about your rapid rises. Steve made his Socceroo debut in 1980 after moving to the Brisbane Strikers. So in 8 years he's gone from never playing to playing for Australia. Congrats Steve & welcome aboard.

ps... Churchie is also where Matt McKay went to school.

Steve Hogg is one of the players that I have my eyes on this season. I know that he did not have a great season last year, but I think that it is bound to change. Just looking at how he kept improving all throughout the season, I feel like this season is going to be his breakout season. I want to see if my predictions are right. I just know that this is the season that where he becomes an all star.

Greg Werner began playing in 1965, with the GrassRoots club of Socceroo skipper Murray Barnes, a change of suburb at age 6 and a new club, one that would become the GrassRoots club of Rob Wheatley & after a 27 year hiatus came back to playing with the GrassRoots club of Socceroos Steve Perry, Richie Bell, Chris Iconomidis & Matilda, Justine Fisher, one could say that the links with the NT are ingrained.
At age 55, when his body gave up on playing, he took up the whistle to stay actively involved. In November of 2014 he created the GFP on Facebook to fill the void left by those in control of the game & in January 2016 launched this website.
