Socceroo #199 learned his football with the Iona Swifts on the freezing fields of Londonderry's Polo Fields and thanks to a well travelled Geography teacher and a desire for warmer climes Ron left home as an 18 year old and a year later he was winning a title with the Victoria Park club in Perth.
The goal keeper turned dogged defender made his Socceroo debut in 1954 in the first test loss on tour of NZ and was in line for selection for the 56 Melbourne Olympics, but that spot went to his locally born Nth. Perth team mate Con Purser.
A member of the Football West Hall of Champions, Ron represented Australia on no less than 13 occasions in A & B internationals. At the time of speaking with the GFP Ron was a sprightly 88 years of age and last pulled the boots on only a year earlier.
