An honour and a pleasure to have as our 100th inductee, the late Reg Date.
The highest paid footballer of any code in his era, a player offered contracts to play first division football in England and in NSW rugby league and the deadliest striker ever in Australian club and representative football, is our 100th entry into the GFP. His name is Reg Date, whose GrassRoots football was played both at school & Wallsend, as was common in the 1930's. Plattsburg Primary school est. 1865 & Wallsend FC est. 1887, both still operating and among the oldest schools and clubs in the country. Sadly the home of the Red Devils of Wallsend, the Crystal Palace, is no more being subsumed by a shopping centre in 1988. Thanks go to Reg's biographer Peter Allen for confirming Reg's GrassRoots and for allowing the re-publication of some of the accompanying photos.

the authorGreg Werner began playing in 1965, with the GrassRoots club of Socceroo skipper Murray Barnes, a change of suburb at age 6 and a new club, one that would become the GrassRoots club of Rob Wheatley & after a 27 year hiatus came back to playing with the GrassRoots club of Socceroos Steve Perry, Richie Bell, Chris Iconomidis & Matilda, Justine Fisher, one could say that the links with the NT are ingrained.
At age 55, when his body gave up on playing, he took up the whistle to stay actively involved. In November of 2014 he created the GFP on Facebook to fill the void left by those in control of the game & in January 2016 launched this website. |
