In the red corner, out of Newton-le-Willows in Lancashire comes Socceroo #203. Ray Lloyd has nominated Newton All Saints & Newton Primary as his GrassRoots club. Arriving as a ten pound Pom his words, (his words, not mine) he forged a career with Newcastle Australs in the early 60's and made his Socceroo debut against Singapore in '67 in a team that included fellow GFP nominators the likes of Baartz, Corry, Micic, Ackerley & a certain bloke called Warren. I had the pleasure of spending some time with Ray yesterday and find it an honour to welcome him aboard. Another of the game's true gentlemen.
ps... Yes in 1967 he Captained the Newcastle rep team against Man U and got to play against his idols, a chance only moving to Australia could give him. The lucky country ? For Ray, you bet.
