Mehmet Durakovic has named Port as his GrassRoots club, his only GrassRoots club where he started as a 7-year old and would be joined by Joe Palatsides, eventually Andrew Zinni & Michael Peterson in a side that would take ALL before it. Port now eclipse the Kahibah side from Newcastle, which contained 3 future Matildas making it the most successful Australian GrassRoots side of all time (to this point). Much of the success has been squarely laid down to the work of Stratos Kalogeros, a strict coach who gave the kids discipline yet allowed them to express themselves.
Mehmet made the first of his 44 appearances in the Australian backline as one of 8 debutants in 1990 against Indonesia and has recently become a Cup winning coach in Malaysia.
I wish to thank all the Port alumni and congratulate them and their coaching staff for the debt we, as Australian football fans, owe them.
