GrassRoots football is not just a place to start your career, in the case of today's nominator its also the place you play with your mates just for the fun of it long after the international limelight has been turned off.
Yesterday Sunni Hughes & her old Matilda's team mates Julie Murray & Michelle Watson were at it again taking out the title in the Sutherland comp. Linda "Sunni" Hughes, Matilda #56, Hall of Famer and one of Australia's great goalscorers has nominated Toronto Awaba from the MacQuarie Association in Newcastle as her GrassRoots club.
Sunni made her debut against the Kiwis in 1989 and would garner 78 caps in all scoring 24 times in the Green & Gold. She's still knocking them in and is officially a Matilda, an Olympian & a legend as ratified by her 2013 induction into the Australian Football Hall of Fame.

Football is actually my Dad’s favorite sport before. He even became one of the best known players back when he was still in College. He has lots and lots of fans according to him which is kind of funny for us because he is this man with a huge belly right now. Well, despite of that huge belly, I do still admire him for being so athletic and determined before. He knows how to balance his academics and social life and even his hobbies which is way different with how I handle things. Unlike him, I am actually an introvert.

Greg Werner began playing in 1965, with the GrassRoots club of Socceroo skipper Murray Barnes, a change of suburb at age 6 and a new club, one that would become the GrassRoots club of Rob Wheatley & after a 27 year hiatus came back to playing with the GrassRoots club of Socceroos Steve Perry, Richie Bell, Chris Iconomidis & Matilda, Justine Fisher, one could say that the links with the NT are ingrained.
At age 55, when his body gave up on playing, he took up the whistle to stay actively involved. In November of 2014 he created the GFP on Facebook to fill the void left by those in control of the game & in January 2016 launched this website.
