John hails from Newton le Willows, the same small town between Liverpool & Manchester, as '67 Socceroo Ray Lloyd.
John was an apprentice at a club closely linked with Australian football, Preston North End. (Marston & Wright) He played senior football there before emigrating in 1978 and playing with Prahran Slavia.
He made his Socceroo debut against the Czechs after moving to Heidelberg in 1980 & in only his second match, his first in the starting XI, he fronted the might of England at the SCG.
