The Sutherland Shire Football Assn is the largest in the southern hemisphere with about 20k registered players, the first local to make it to the top is today's nominator.
John Roche, Socceroo #215, has nominated St.George Police Boys at Mortdale as his GrassRoots club. John was too young to play for his local side Como West so he and a bunch of mates used to jump on the train over the bridge to get a game. Eventually Como had a team he could play in so at 16 he came back home.
He made his Australian debut in the friendly against Iran in 1970 alongside fellow defence debutants Wilson, McKay, Yaeger, Curran & Reilly. John returned to coach kids at Como West and still enjoys life in the Shire.
