Today's nominator is Matilda #45, "Jumping" Janine McPhee.
Janine has nominated the Waverley Soccer Club from Melbourne's eastern suburbs as her GrassRoots club. Through a series of mergers and name changes the club has over the years morphed into the Eastern Lions, but Gardiners Crk Res., has always been home. Back in the day, Margaret Roy would train the girls until the lights went out but the aromas from the Arnotts factory would fill the air, trying times.
A defender, Janine made her Matilda's debut in 1987 at 19, in a tournament in Taipei against Canada, gathering 6 caps in all, at a time when games were few and far between & images even fewer.
Thanks to fellow Matildas Traci Bartlett & Carolyn Monk for the pics and to John Milway & Kyle Patterson for helping hunt down the club emblem.
It is indeed a pleasure to welcome you aboard Janine & thanks for your patience & humour.

Hello Greg. Just been catching up with Janine for the first time since 1983 when I was coaching the senior girls soccer team at Scoresby High School, which Janine attended from 1979 to 1983 in Yr 11. In 1983, the senior girls, led by Janine, were the metro champions for State schools, beating Canterbury Girls HS in the final. I will try to find some photos of Janine and the team. Not surprisingly in those days, I was able to build a team around Janine with her skills. Scoresby HS didn't have many notable sporting successes, but this was one of them, thanks to Janine. Hope this helps in your quest.

Greg Werner began playing in 1965, with the GrassRoots club of Socceroo skipper Murray Barnes, a change of suburb at age 6 and a new club, one that would become the GrassRoots club of Rob Wheatley & after a 27 year hiatus came back to playing with the GrassRoots club of Socceroos Steve Perry, Richie Bell, Chris Iconomidis & Matilda, Justine Fisher, one could say that the links with the NT are ingrained.
At age 55, when his body gave up on playing, he took up the whistle to stay actively involved. In November of 2014 he created the GFP on Facebook to fill the void left by those in control of the game & in January 2016 launched this website.
