Socceroo #122 is Jack Mather, former captain of South Australia.
Jack's first contact with football was being picked off the parade ground to play in a match for the Fleet Air Arm of the RAN as a teenager during WWII. He found the love and found a club, Coventry City, after the war and eventually made his way to Australia.
Coming through the Birkalla & Juventus clubs, Jack made his full Australian team debut in 1954 against the Kiwis.
His story is, I have no doubt, unique & we will likely never hear its kind again and is yet another chapter in the rich past of our game that makes it so easy to love. Thank you Mathers for your contribution & welcome aboard.
