Finding photos of some of our internationals is harder than winning the lottery, then... bingo. Finally, I can add the name of Ian Hunter, Socceroo #298 to our list.

The club Ian nominated as his GrassRoots club is Blue Mountains FC from Glenbrook the first town on the climb heading west from Sydney.
The club only began in 1965 & Ian was there at Knapsack Park almost at the beginning.
Ian holds a remarkable place in our history making his debut off the bench in 1980 against PNG and then scoring a hat-trick. It was his only "A" international appearance, such was the reign of Rudi Gutendorf.

It is truly a relief to welcome Ian aboard & many thanks to Zisis Nioplias for the pic of the '79 World Youth team.

I played against Ian a few times in the late 1970's. He went to school at Penrith High and I was at St. Dominics College. We played the final of the schools competition in 1979, and with Ian Penrith were favourites to win. However, he didn't play in the final and St. Doms won 2-1 at Parker Street playing fields. It was St. Dom's first success at football as the school was predominantly a rugby league breeding ground. A few of our team, including me, later went on to represent Nepean at District level along with Ian who was easily the best player in the area.

I also went to school with Ian and played with him for The Blue Mountains Soccer club. Ian was an exceptional player after a few years at BMSC he moved to play for Penrith RSL club and so did I we also played for Nepean United Rep team. It was great to be part of his team back in those early years.

I remember playing against Ian when he was with the Blue Mountains team and then he moved to Penrith City. I played for St Marys Convent followed by St Dominics. We were the premier teams back then and often played off in grand finals. We also played together in the Nepean rep teams, in which he's father used to coach us. Some great fun times were had during those year's.

Greg Werner began playing in 1965, with the GrassRoots club of Socceroo skipper Murray Barnes, a change of suburb at age 6 and a new club, one that would become the GrassRoots club of Rob Wheatley & after a 27 year hiatus came back to playing with the GrassRoots club of Socceroos Steve Perry, Richie Bell, Chris Iconomidis & Matilda, Justine Fisher, one could say that the links with the NT are ingrained.
At age 55, when his body gave up on playing, he took up the whistle to stay actively involved. In November of 2014 he created the GFP on Facebook to fill the void left by those in control of the game & in January 2016 launched this website.
