Welcome aboard Graham.
Our next cab off the rank is another member of the '56 Olympics side, in fact as Tim Cahill scored out first World Cup goal, this man scored our first goal at the Olympics in a 2-0 win over Japan. Socceroo #154 is Graham McMillan who has nominated the now defunct Postal Institute side as his GrassRoots club, playing out of Chermside in Brisbane's northern suburbs. Graham was selected out of the YMCA side in Brisbane to make the Olympic side you see below. He's at the right hand end standing.
Welcome aboard Graham.

G’day Graham you worked with my dad Syd( and me) in the 1970s. We followed Brisbane Norths Devils rugby league teams from the mid 1950s. He had been a high school strapper (with George Moore and Neville Selwood) for his Hendra racehorse trainer uncle and maternal Aunty with whom he boarded while at Industrial High School as well as a state level amateur boxer prior to becoming a 19 yo WW2 pilot. He mentioned your prowess as a soccer player. He regarded himself as fortunate to have reached 71 when he died with most of the aircrew who went overseas with him not returning. I have 3 grandsons all of whom are playing soccer. Hope you’re still enjoying good health. Regards Perry

the authorGreg Werner began playing in 1965, with the GrassRoots club of Socceroo skipper Murray Barnes, a change of suburb at age 6 and a new club, one that would become the GrassRoots club of Rob Wheatley & after a 27 year hiatus came back to playing with the GrassRoots club of Socceroos Steve Perry, Richie Bell, Chris Iconomidis & Matilda, Justine Fisher, one could say that the links with the NT are ingrained.
At age 55, when his body gave up on playing, he took up the whistle to stay actively involved. In November of 2014 he created the GFP on Facebook to fill the void left by those in control of the game & in January 2016 launched this website. |
