A graduate of school football & the Granville Kewpies club in what was then the heartland of football in Sydney's western suburbs, Sanders followed his elder brother, into the game, Reg having also played rep football before enlisting with the AIF.
George played in the 1949 series against Hajduk Split but made his full Australian debut in 1950 as a member of the Australian touring party to South Africa alongside 7 other debutants in the first test at the Kingsmead ground in Durban, including Granville team mate Eric Hulme.
Kewpies can boast over 100 years in the game playing out of Colquhoun Park in Sth.Granville and accessed by Henderson Lane, named in recognition of former Socceroos, father and son, Andy & Bill Henderson great servants of the game in the Granville district.
