Frank's path to the green and gold came not through the State League system, nor through the enormous Protestant Churches system but through the equally old and until now, overlooked, Boy Scouts system. Frank Sands learned his football with Leichhardt 4ths, not 4th grade, but the fourth scout troupe in Leichhardt. He graduated to play with nearby Haberfield and eventually with the local State League club, Leichhardt-Annandale, the home of Joe Marston, which would go on to become Apia.
In a bizarre twist the last club he would play with was Killarney on the Central Coast of NSW where he would play with an old school team-mate of mine.
Frank is the first player to name a club from the Scouts Association & it was truly an honour to spend some time with him & his family to uncover his story.
