The upside to having work washed out is I get to spend time chatting to legends like Socceroo #191 and finding out about their GrassRoots memories. Atti Abonyi has nominated the now defunct St. Kilda Soccer club as his GrassRoots club.
Joining in 1958 and playing out of Middle Park in Melbourne Atti was driven to games by fellow Socceroo Ted Smith in the back of Ted's ute with other team mates. Atti was one of those players we pretended to be in the playground at school, a man who played much of his time alongside Johnny Warren at St.George & a man who debuted for his country in 1967 against the Kiwis racking up 61 caps in a memorable career that saw him one of the first chosen for our 1974 World Cup appearance.
