His football career was short-lived and he settled with tennis as his sport of choice where he became President of the Ipswich Tennis Association and sadly died at age 34. A life lost way too early.
Socceroo #9, was Clarrie Shenton who played his GrassRoots football @ Ipswich Grammar School in Qld. A natural sportsman, Shenton played at Bundamba after leaving school before moving to Brisbane where he played a season of Rugby & one of Australian Rules before he made such an impression at Wynnum in their inaugural season that he was selected in the first ever Australian international side.

Hi Greg--Clarrie Shenton's football at Ipswich Grammar was most likely Rugby League--the GPS Association was formed in 1918 and initially played RL, as the QRU was struggling in 1919 and became defunct from 1920 until 1928. Soccer football wasn't introduced officially into the GPS system until 1991

I've since learned that Clarrie Shenton was born around 1901 - so he would have attended Ipswich Grammar School during the war years - the school played rugby union football at that time

More about Clarrie and his involvement with Ipswich tennis. I wonder if Ted Kruger (mentioned in the article) had some involvement with the football Kruger Cup

Just realised that Clarrie was born around 1900, so his attendance at Ipswich Grammar School would have been around 1912-15 or so--he would have been playing Rugby Union there

the authorGreg Werner began playing in 1965, with the GrassRoots club of Socceroo skipper Murray Barnes, a change of suburb at age 6 and a new club, one that would become the GrassRoots club of Rob Wheatley & after a 27 year hiatus came back to playing with the GrassRoots club of Socceroos Steve Perry, Richie Bell, Chris Iconomidis & Matilda, Justine Fisher, one could say that the links with the NT are ingrained.
At age 55, when his body gave up on playing, he took up the whistle to stay actively involved. In November of 2014 he created the GFP on Facebook to fill the void left by those in control of the game & in January 2016 launched this website. |
