His first real club was Kilsyth & in his later teens he was drafted into the ranks of the Dumbarton juniors, then Campsie Blackwatch. A typical weekend would see a school match Saturday morning, a club game in the afternoon & on Sunday the much spoken about pub comp where players of much higher calibre would often play under assumed names, even after playing in an "Old Firm" game. Football was their life, a life that eventually brought Charlie to Oz and the NSL, making his debut for his adopted country in 1982.
Charlie Egan, Socceroo #320, lead the typical life of a lad growing on Clydeside. Football came first, second & third. His football was learned on the streets & in the schoolyard & thus he has nominated his schools... Holy Cross Primary & Our Lady's High School in Croy as his GrassRoots sides. You'd probably guess he didn't grow up a Rangers fan.

the authorGreg Werner began playing in 1965, with the GrassRoots club of Socceroo skipper Murray Barnes, a change of suburb at age 6 and a new club, one that would become the GrassRoots club of Rob Wheatley & after a 27 year hiatus came back to playing with the GrassRoots club of Socceroos Steve Perry, Richie Bell, Chris Iconomidis & Matilda, Justine Fisher, one could say that the links with the NT are ingrained.
At age 55, when his body gave up on playing, he took up the whistle to stay actively involved. In November of 2014 he created the GFP on Facebook to fill the void left by those in control of the game & in January 2016 launched this website. |
