Julie Porter will forever be the name best associated with bringing women's football in one of the oldest footballing regions in the country, to the forefront.
Matilda #20 grew up playing in boys teams at the Thirroul Junior Soccer club a club like many others squeezed between the Illawarra escarpment & the sea, less than an hour south of Sydney. Porter was a member of the first women's team from neighbouring Bulli in the inaugural Illawarra women's competition in 1978, a competition that was possibly the best populated in the country, offering football for 22 teams over 2 divisions.
