Like the great Alan Marnoch before him John McDonald grew up learning his football at the Smeaton Boys Club in Kirkaldy across the water from Edinburgh in Scotland.
A part of the 60's & 70s wave of British footballers to emigrate to our shores McDonald had begun playing in the schoolyard before playing as a 12-yr old with the under U15s at Smeaton. He then moved on to the higher level at Blairgowrie Juniors & then, still a teenager to Raith Rovers where he came under the tutelage of former Celtic star Bobby Evans.
John made the move to Australia in 1970 as a 23 year old where he settled into local football with Auburn in the NSW State League. John is one of only 2 players to have won the prestigious Rothmans Medal twice in 1973 & '75, the other is the legendary John Watkiss.
McDonald made his only full appearance for the Socceroos in 1972 against New Zealand.
