Pinning down the club that Laura actually regards as her GrassRoots club was never going to be easy given that this young lady from Canberra played at three clubs during her junior days in the ACT. In the end she settled on the club she started with, Tuggeranong Utd (Tuggies). In doing so she takes Tuggies to the equal lead on the Matildas production line having already been named by Matildas Amy Taylor & Lydia Williams as their GFP club and bringing to 6 the confirmed number of Socceroos & Matildas they can count amongst their alumni.
Beginning her journey as a seven year old at Wanniassa Fields in the southern suburbs, Hughes spent three seasons with the club before moving on to Brindabella & eventually Woden. It was while at Woden that she met her most influential mentor, Col Johnson who turned her from being a striker into the international midfielder that she has since become.
Laura made her Australian debut in the 2025 series against Chinese Taipei in Geelong alongside fellow debutant Chloe Lincoln.
